A recent study ranked Florida 50th of all states for unsafe driving in school zones. Starting July 1st, 2023, there’s a
new way to remedy that.
Florida school zones can now use automated speed enforcement cameras to identify and penalize speeders and keep students safe. This new Florida speeding legislation allows law enforcement agencies to install speed enforcement cameras to alert drivers to be aware of students and slow down when entering school zones.
The law allows for ticketing of any driver exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 miles. The cameras can only be in use during the 45 minute intervals that school zones are in effect as students arrive and depart from school each day. They would be inactive during other times, including summer break.
A Welcome Reprieve
The speed cameras are a welcome reprieve for worried parents. Twenty Florida counties received an F for driver behavior in school zones in a nationwide study. Florida speeding has deadly repercussions- the state has the highest pedestrian fatality rate per 100,000 population. With the new speed cameras in effect, law makers and residents are all hopeful that children will be safer on Florida’s roads.
