This part of the summer is an important one for cities across the country. The NHTSA (U.S. DOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) designated the weeks of July 10-31 to bring awareness to the importance of speed prevention and there’s a good reason why.
Fatalities from traffic crashes have been steadily increasing in recent years despite advancements in vehicle safety and passenger protection. In 2020, there were a staggering 11,258 people killed in speed-related crashes.
Traffic Logix is proud to be teaming up with the NHTSA to remind drivers to stop speeding. The primary responsibility for safe streets lies with each individual driver. And following speed limits and maintaining focus on the roads keeps drivers, and everyone else on the street, safe.
Why Speed?
There are many reason people speed despite the dangers involved. Many drivers think they’re invincible and that the rules of the road don’t apply to them. Others simply don’t pay attention to speed limits, distracted by phones or even just their own thoughts. But ultimately speeding is a selfish and dangerous behavior. It hinders the ability to respond to outside stimuli and can have deadly consequences.
For cities wondering how to stop speeding, there are many concrete ways to prevent speeding, and speeding related deaths, on your roads.
Educating Drivers
The NHTSA campaign messaging reminds drivers of the dangers of speeding with slogans like “driving faster could lead to disaster,” “going fast puts lives on the line,” and “speeding catches up with you.” Combined with graphic imagery, they are a sober reminder to drivers of the perils of speeding.
Education campaigns like these are a great way to engage drivers and remind them of the repercussions of speeding. However, education along with engineering- or physical changes- is an even more effective way to slow cars down.
