The world of technology is developing at a dizzying pace and traffic calming is no exception. At Traffic Logix, we’ve been keeping pace with technology and developing ITS solutions that help cities across the world to slow speeders down and save lives. But in the process, we’ve discovered something unexpected.
While advanced safety technology like speed cameras and interactive speed signs are growing in popularity, many cities are discovering that simple solutions are still an effective way to slow cars down. Our recycled rubber traffic calming solutions are seeing a resurgence in use in cities across the country. Why are so many cities choosing basic solutions and are they really making a difference?
Speed Humps and Beyond
While today Traffic Logix is renowned as an ITS company with a robust offering of cloud connected, intelligent solutions, we actually began as a traffic calming company focusing on physical slowing devices. And most of our initial product offerings are still available, and suddenly more popular than ever. Our recycled rubber speed humps, cushions and tables are completely customizable. They are constructed of 18” interlocking rubber units that can be constructed to create standard size solutions or ones in any configuration that meet your needs
Speed humps are made by using our rubber units to create a parabolic shape that slows cars to 10-30 mph depending on the length you choose. Speed tables are made by using the same units and a similar configuration but adding a flat top, which creates more gradual slowing.
And our speed cushions, always popular on primary response routes, are created as a series of small speed humps across the width of the road. Emergency vehicles can straddle them without slowing while cars must reduce their speeds to pass, creating a resolution to the age-old problem of how to slow cars without affecting emergency response.
Our rubber lineup also includes curbing solutions such as our SuperFlex Curbing units that can be used to create traffic circles and road narrowing. We also offer CycleLane curbing that’s designed for dedicated bike lanes.
Why Rubber?
While traffic calming units like speed humps, tables, and cushions can also be molded from asphalt, there’s a reason more and more cities are choosing rubber instead. Unlike asphalt that needs to be carefully formed by a dedicated crew, rubber is preformed and ready to install out of the box. It also requires no road closures and can be removed in the event of road resurfacing or for snow season.
Rubber is also long lasting and durable and embedded with bright, visible highway tape, unlike asphalt which chips and fades over time. At Traffic Logix, our products are made with 100% recycled rubber from abandoned tires, adding the benefit of environmental friendliness.
Do They Actually Work?
Studies and research abound on the effectiveness of speed humps and the like to slow cars down and prevent crashes and injuries. But thanks to our own cloud-based tracking solutions, we can actually help our customers track the difference on their own streets.
Our SpeedTracker is an affordable, cloud-based tool that allows you to compare before and after data when using rubber traffic calming to slow traffic on your streets. And when using our rubber solutions in conjunction with any of our ITS solutions like our digital signs or speed cameras, you can also access detailed data and reports on performance and driver behavior.
Whatever your speed challenges, we have what you need to create safer, more livable streets. But sometimes instead of looking forward, the answer might just lie behind you. At Traffic Logix we offer forward thinking solutions without losing focus of the effectiveness and efficacy of solutions that go back to the basics. Ready to find out more?
