Greer, South Carolina protects a high traffic downtown gateway and streets throughout the city with SafePace EV11 signs.
Situated at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city of Greer offers beautiful scenery and a busy downtown district. Greer is home to around 20,000 residents as well as the only BMW manufacturing plant in the United States.
As traffic heads into downtown Greer, too many cars speed far above the posted speed limits. With a high volume of daily traffic, the Greer police department was concerned of potential accidents. It was unrealistic to constantly post patrol cars on the road. They wanted to instead alert drivers to their speeds to slow them down. In the past, they had tried speed trailers that attached to patrol vehicles but found them to be too bulky and cumbersome. They wanted a solution that would be easy to install and lightweight but could be used for long-term speed control.
In addition, police were fielding ongoing complaints from residents about speeding on local streets. They wanted a solution that could slow vehicles down and then be moved and relocated as new speed issues arose. They had used portable speed signs from a popular manufacturer in the past but had experienced multiple issues with the signs including inadequate technical support and quick battery drainage.
It was important to the Greer PD to work with a company that could walk them through the process and offer ongoing support to help them navigate the backend and deal with any potential challenges.
The Greer PD chose the Traffic Logix SafePace EV 11 signs both for the downtown gateway area and to rotate on residential roads. The lightweight, portable signs display driver speed in brightly lit 11” LED digits. The city chose these signs because of the intuitive user-friendly design, simple installation, and ability to use one sign at multiple locations.
One of the signs was mounted permanently in the downtown gateway area. The second sign is rotated to different residential areas based on complaints. A simple universal mounting bracket lets the Greer PD mount the same sign at many different locations quickly and easily.
The SafePace Evolution signs slow cars down on Greer’s roads while relieving police officers from constantly patrolling trouble areas. Using before and after data gathered from the signs, Greed PD was able to see that the top speed categories dropped 25% with the use of the signs.
They particularly like the way data can be viewed remotely and aggregated into different reports. They use stealth mode to gather baseline data without drivers seeing their speed displayed. With the SafePace Cloud, they are able to view data and change sign settings instantly from anywhere with wifi.
“We’re really happy with the signs,” said Sergeant Randle Ballenger of the Greer PD. “We plan to order more of them. [Traffic Logix has been a] fantastic company to work with. I love calling in and feeling like I’m talking to someone who knows me and has spoken to me before. [We’ve received] great customer support with the tech team.”
The Greer Chief of Police is pleased with the signs as well, as is the City Administrator. For Greer, streets are safer downtown and throughout the city thanks to the EV11 signs from Traffic Logix.
