Fort Erie Tackles Speeding with Radar Speed Signs
Fort Erie addresses rural speeding and protects residents and tourists with Traffic Logix radar speed signs.
The Challenge
Fort Erie is a charming town in Southern Ontario with a landscape that blends bustling urban traffic with serene rural roads. Many roads traverse through residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and open countryside. Home to a variety of tourist attractions, including historic Old Fort Erie and the beautiful beaches of Lake Erie, the town is also a popular travel destination.
Speeding was a concern, particularly on rural roads where long stretches can lead to excessive speeding. On several rural roads, drivers were exceeding the posted speed limit by 20 km/hr, and in some cases, even more. This posed a serious safety risk, particularly in areas with limited visibility and pedestrian activity.
In addition, the town wanted a way to ensure that streets were safe for residents while effectively managing influxes of visitor traffic. The goal was to enhance road safety without disrupting traffic flow, creating a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.
The Solution
Fort Erie explored several radar signs but decided on Traffic Logix radar signs due to superior data accuracy, visibility, and remote access capabilities. Other alternatives lacked the comprehensive features and ease of use that the Traffic Logix signs offered. In addition to real-time speed feedback to drivers the signs also gather crucial data for ongoing traffic management.
The radar signs now installed on Fort Erie’s roads combine cutting-edge technology with user-friendly design to deliver unparalleled performance. The bright, dynamic displays capture driver attention, encouraging them to adhere to speed limits. The signs seamlessly integrate into existing traffic safety infrastructure, making them an essential tool to enhance road safety and promote responsible driving.
Fort Erie strategically deployed their signs focusing on roads with high incidence of speeding, frequent traffic violations, and/or a history of traffic collisions. The selection was based on rigorous analysis of traffic patterns, community feedback, and high-risk areas. Several of the selected locations are in school zones or near recreational facilities where pedestrian activity is high. By targeting these areas, the town aims to maximize the impact of the radar signs.
The Benefits
The results were striking. Following the installation of the Traffic Logix speed signs, the town saw an average speed reduction of 5 km/hr on many rural roads. One local streets saw a 15% drop in the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/hr while another saw a decrease of 11%.
As Yashesh Gandhi, one of the town’s Transportation Engineers, noted, the data from the signs indicates that “drivers are becoming more aware of their speeds and are adjusting their behavior accordingly, contributing to a safer environment for all road users.”
Encouraged by these successes, the town is exploring further traffic-calming solutions and planning to create a more comprehensive traffic calming strategy using additional Traffic Logix solutions to protect everyone who uses Fort Erie’s streets.
