Slowing Traffic on Oviedo Roads
In the city of Oviedo, Florida, a city with almost no traffic calming devices on its streets, Traffic Logix speed cushions really calmed things down.
The newer sections of Oviedo are designed with residents in mind, using traffic engineering techniques to keep motorist speeds near posted speed limits. But some older neighborhoods are laid out quite differently. Streets in these neighborhoods have many egress points, leaving the residential roads exposed to cut through traffic and speeding vehicles. Recently, the city received numerous complaints from residents in these neighborhoods. In response, traffic studies were conducted to determine the need for traffic calming. The studies confirmed the residents' complaints; traffic calming was imperative.
The city wanted to purchase traffic calming devices that would not require full road closures and that would allow simple removal if necessary. It was also important to Oviedo that devices be able to accommodate fire engines and other emergency vehicles.
Traffic Logix rubber speed cushions and flexible curbing for traffic circles were a natural choice. Part of what drew the city to the Traffic Logix devices is the simple installation process and the unique interlocking system with which the pieces are bolted down and kept firmly in place. This allows the rubber devices to be used as permanent solutions as well as to be easily removed when necessary. The city engineer additionally noted that in addition to other advantages, the rubber devices also cost slightly less than what asphalt would have cost the city to install.
Once the plan was created to use the Traffic Logix products to slow vehicles, the city obtained Seminole County's traffic calming manual for guidance in designing an effective program. Although the manual offered helpful information, Tami Concepcion P.E., the city engineer, reported that Craig Timothy, the Traffic Logix Director of Business Development, offered invaluable assistance and insight in helping to develop the Oviedo traffic calming program. She described Traffic Logix' customer service as: 'above excellent... just top notch.'
The fourteen speed cushions and the traffic circle the city installed have proven quite effective in reducing vehicular speed. In one of the tested areas, the 85th percentile speed was reduced from 38 to 26.
The residents' response to the speed cushions has been quite positive as well. With speeding reduced and cut through traffic minimized, the streets of Oviedo are now a safer place to live.
Other Florida communities that have purchased Traffic Logix products include Coral Springs, Fort Myers, Lynn Haven, Oakland Park, Panama City, Sarasota, and West Palm Beach.
